How I Transformed my Failing Etsy Shop from a Waste of Time into Full-Time Income
I started out on Etsy like everybody does – I uploaded my first set of products and I was *EXCITED* (with a capital friggin’ E).
That first day I was secretly worried that I’d wake up to more sales than I could possibly ship. As I tried to sleep that night, I was tingly and restless with anticipation.
As the night wore on, it got worse. My imagination took over and I was convinced that ALL THE THINGS would happen – I’d have people asking me for wholesale, I’d have to create physical versions of all my digital items, and my email would be overflowing.
And when I woke up in the morning, it was like a scene from a Christmas movie…
I ran downstairs, eyes wide. At this point, it was no longer a secret that I planned to have 100’s of orders.
I threw the lid on my computer open, and paced impatiently as my screen loaded. And you know what I saw?
ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY NOTHING.
Whomp whomp.
And that’s the reality of selling online…
If you build it, they will NOT come.
Ugh, it HURTS!
Cut to 3 weeks later: Shit was getting BLEAK.
I started getting desperate… scraping the bottom of the barrel with whatever spammy tricks I could afford.
My items were getting a few piddly favorites here and there…And to my horror, I was watching my visits plummet a little more each day. Over 20 days had come and gone without a single sale, or even so much as a convo.
I HAD to do something…so I did what the Internet does best. Found all the SPAMMY marketing tactics I possibly could, and then I tried them ALL. AT. ONCE.
Here’s a sampling of the utter bullshit I resorted to:
- I paid a company with a big following to re-pin my Etsy items
- I frantically tried every new Etsy app that came along
- I spent every Saturday reposting my Etsy links anywhere the internet would let me
I was spending money desperately trying to move the needle, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t making any difference.
NOTHING FRIGGIN’ WORKED.
My first month on Etsy (total income: -$40)
It was 30 days later, and I made TWO measly sales. After expenses, I was LOSING money.
Why Won’t my Shit SELL??
One day I sat down and thought to myself…ok, -$40 isn’t going to work. I’m CLEARLY missing something, because plenty of people are selling LOWER QUALITY things than I am…
So why isn’t my shop selling out?
At that moment, I had a realization. Wimpy little apps, software, and spammy advertising techniques that promise BIG (coughcough*unrealistic*) results DON’T WORK.
If it sounds too good to be true, IT IS.
Need I remind you what happened when I tried every spammy trick in the book??
-$40 *whomp whomp*
And instead of doing these “little” fixes that really do a whole lot of nothing, I decided to work BACKWARDS.
I didn’t want to be a flash-in-the-pan, small-time Etsy seller who grabs any sale she can.
I wanted to be a here for the long-run BRAND.
Honestly: does anyone want to be compared to those Alibaba sellers who just make a quick buck on whatever they can sell?
Do you want your customers to feel like you’re desperate for the sale? Or do you want them to be overjoyed with the carefully crafted EXPERIENCE they get every time they enter your shop?
The answer seemed pretty obvious to me.
So, I STOPPED doing the make-a-quick-buck tactics (which by the way, didn’t make me a single dime)…and I started thinking like a TRUE high-quality business owner.
I asked myself:
What are the 3 most reputable, widely accepted tactics that create SUCCESS online? How can I apply those to my shop in the next 6 months?
I used the answers to these questions to plan out my next 30 days. Let’s take a look at what happened:

Yup, you’re looking at a bit more than 30 days worth of results ^^ …BUT If you made +$3000 just 30 days after you made -$40, you’d realize you found something AMAZING too!
I’m gonna go ahead and math for you because this is really important:
I’m talking about a 7500% increase in profit – just because I changed my tactics.
Why am I showing you a graph of my first 6 months selling online? Because my results weren’t a one-time fluke: they were REPEATABLE.
Imagine knowing that as long as you do a few things every month, you’ll bring in income no matter what. And the more you do something, the more income you can create:

The Blueprint for Etsy Success
I created a custom-designed Etsy STRATEGY (that I tested again and again) in my own shop, until I saw consistent, reliable results.
Then I refined it, put it on autopilot, and sat back while the sales kept coming.

What’s your story? How did you get here?
I used to work as a Contributing Editor for a national scrapbook magazine and when they unexpectedly ceased publication, I found myself instantly without a job…without any income. In the past, I had toyed with the idea of opening an Etsy shop but was too scared to take the leap. Losing my job…well, that shoved me over the edge.
Having no idea what to expect, I opened my Etsy shop in 2013 with 11 items! I spent hours and hours a day designing products. I believe on day three, I made my first sale. FOUR DOLLARS! And trust me, that was the most excited I have ever been in my life about $4!
The next day I received an order for $18. In that moment I realized I could make this business a success. So I spent hours and hours, day after day, month after month, designing products and building my shop…sometimes making as litle as $5 a day. Others thought I was crazy. And yes, working 9 hours a day for $5 sounds crazy looking from the outside in. But I knew in my heart I was going to be successful.
It was just going to take time…and A LOT of hard work. Fast forward to today, I’ve made over 15,000 sales and my 2018 numbers have doubled from 2017. On a more personal note, I have a husband, six children, and a full time job in addition to my Etsy shop. If I can find the time to do this, anyone can! (Psst! Last month, I made almost three times as much from my Etsy shop than I made from my regular full time job!)

I started an Etsy store as a trial because creating my own website traffic was taking a lot of time and work. I had heard about other peoples success and thought why not. After some sales trickling in and beating the amount of sales I was getting on my website, I knew I had to get more sales but I didn’t know how. I found a couple of the Fuzzy Birch blog posts and started to make changes. The results were good but I wanted them to be better so I signed up and have never looked back.

What was your situation like before you joined the Subscriber Tribe?
I climbed on the Fuzzy and Birch bandwagon in January 2017. My shop opened to crickets on Labor day weekend in 2016. I was barely getting any page views and didn’t make my first real sale until the end of November. I quickly realized I needed to adapt my product offerings to things people actually wanted or my shop would die a slow, quiet death.
What made you choose the Tribe over anything else you could have done?
I wanted a straight-forward, actionable tips – not just the generic “take better photos” or “focus on your seo.” Jenni’s tips were very specific and included tasks I could work on quickly and easily to see results.
What did you find as a result of buying this product?
The year I opened my shop had 1,106 views and just 22 sales. It’s mid-May and I’ve already had 15,480 pageviews, 212 orders and last month was my most profitable month ever (almost double what I made last Christmas).
What specific feature did you like most about the Tribe?
The Ultimate Guide to Etsy is a must read! I really liked the worksheets that go along with all the tutorials; the time management tips have been the ones I still use daily. The 6 minute makeovers are also great. I also really like the no nonsense, cut the crap attitude Jenni has to get her points across, it’s refreshing!

Huge increase in sales, pageviews and profit on the items sold.
What would you say to someone who’s on the fence about joining the Tribe?
If you’re new to Etsy or don’t know where to start with fixing your shop, the Tribe is where you need to be. A lot of people fall into the trap of trying to copy another shop in order to hopefully copy their success but being different is what attracts people to Etsy in the first place.
The tribe tells you how to balance being original while also showing you how to give your audience what they want so you get pageviews instead of crickets. To me, this focused originality is the core of what makes an Etsy shop a success or a flop.
What’s your story? How did you get here?
I’ve been a SAHM for almost 6 years now, doing freelance graphic design jobs here and there for the past 10 years.
A few years ago I joined a local moms group and began volunteering to do all their graphic design projects (monthly newsletters, two cookbooks, building a website, making flyers, business cards, preschool fair programs, etc).
After I gave birth to my second daughter it occurred to me that there were so many moms groups out there that needed this kind of marketing and graphic design support and it gave me the idea to start my moms group blog, Oh Hi Penguin! and I later opened the OHP Design Boutique on Etsy.
I quickly realized that even though moms groups’ wanted design help they don’t necessarily have the means or desire to pay for it so a few months after opening my shop I started selling mugs that would appeal to my same audience (newish moms with a sense of humor).
After I finally started getting sales I branched out with several other products I thought they would be interested in (nursery prints, baby blankets, t-shirts, games, cards, toys, planners, etc).

What was your situation like before you joined the Subscriber Tribe?
I had a good thing going but had stopped growing and needed ideas for ways to expand/take things to the next level.
What made you choose the Tribe over anything else you could have done?
I had watched some of the Fuzzy and Birch youtube tutorials before (about how to use Marmalead) and had downloaded the Etsy Keywords worksheet for tags and I really loved that, so I knew Jenni gave advice I could follow and had tools I wanted. I also loved her communication style (swearing, yay!) which was a big win for me.
What did you find as a result of buying this product?
That I could be doing a lot more to boost my shop (especially through Pinterest, which I was barely using at the time I joined the Tribe). Now I have a Pinterest business account, and I use Tailwind, and I’ve also started creating more items that are downloadable or through a dropshipper (aka I don’t have to make anything or walk to the post office)
What specific feature did you like most about the Tribe?
I liked that some things could be done at my own pace and on my own (tutorials, watching things in the Vault and the monthly “courses”) but that other features were more interactive and came out monthly (get shit done sessions / Q&As). I like being able to dig in when I want, but also being forced to pace myself — because otherwise I go hard for 2 weeks overhauling EVERYTHING and get burnt out and want nothing to do with my shop for weeks. There is a good balance of pace with the Tribe.
What are three benefits you’ve experienced as a result of joining?
Way more social media traffic (mostly Pinterest). More traffic from Google (and other non-Etsy search engines). I now know about tools (like GetVela) that allow me to bulk edit and make improvements WAY FASTER than the one-at-a-time method I used to use.
What would you say to someone who’s on the fence about joining the Tribe?
I’d say that if you were really committed to growing your shop and improving traffic & giving yourself the best chance to sell on Etsy, that you’d be silly not to join. Yes, you could *maybe* EVENTUALLY find free advice for a couple of the things Jenni talks about, but finding it all would take a lot of time.
For anyone who already has a full-time job (me!) or kids, or just wants A LIFE in addition to Etsy, this is an amazing option. Plus you get the bonus of a Tribe community who you can talk with about questions/etc.
What’s your story? How did you get here?
I started selling vintage maps because I bought one at a vintage/art market in Brooklyn in 2010 and thought…hey, if this guy can sell these, I bet I could too! It took me a few years to start at it (and another 2 years to put effort into figuring out Etsy so that I was making some nice $$), but here I am!
And I still have that original map I bought framed on my bedroom wall 🙂

What’s your story? How did you get here?
I’ve always dreamed of being my own boss and having a creative business, but I started living on my own at the age of 17 so it was really hard for me. I put everything I had into pursuing and paying for a college diploma because it was the “right thing to do” and at the same time I was working 30 hours a week and going to school full-time.
The creative business became just a dream and I was more busy making ends meet and paying off debt. When I discovered Etsy in 2015 and ready all the stories about people who have had success online, I decided to make the small investment to give it a try on the side of my full-time job. I probably spent about $500 getting started.
And now 2 years later I’ve made almost $100k in revenue and paid off all those debts and student loans. I am so glad I took the leap! That’s why I always encourage others to just TRY because you’ll never know what you’re capable of if you don’t.

So here’s the #RealTruth about selling on Etsy:
There is always a way to make serious money selling pretty much ANYTHING online. At the end of the day, what matters most is the METHODS you use.
So if you wanna be creative all day, make products and get to design your little heart out, then Etsy is a great option.
In my case, I loved selling on Etsy, but I love blogging more. So for me, it was just a matter of personal preference.
Does that mean the blog route is right for you, or that it’s NECESSARY in order to make 6 figures on Etsy?
Absolutely not — it just so happens that the people who blog about success on Etsy are well, BLOGGERS.
Meaning, you’re not seeing the other side of the coin: all those other 6-figure Etsy sellers that are out there making money? They’re busy running a shop…they don’t have time to blog about it!
I just happened to be one of those sellers who realized she’d rather BLOG than spend all my time on Etsy.
Think about it: in the last ten years, we’ve seen the internet blossom into a place where you can:
- make millions to fund your quirky product,
- get donations from people who want to buy your next jewelry line,
- get paid to dress up your cat,
- sell comics about feminist marine life,
- or become the world’s highest paid youtuber by playing video games all day…
Something tells me your Etsy product probably ISN’T ⇡ that quirky!!
But somehow ALL of these people have figured out how to make a living online.
Are these people “special snowflakes” with unique situations?
NOPE.
Are they “lucky” or “smarter” than everyone else?
Definitely NOT.
Did they have friends in high places who skyrocketed their business?
NO.
Do they rely on free “hacks” and “tricks” from all over the internet to make their monthly paycheck?
Not a CHANCE in HELL.
So what did they do to succeed?
They DID the WORK. They found a way to succeed and they MADE. IT. HAPPEN.
Spoiler Alert: There is no “secret” to selling on Etsy.
Every single successful Etsy shop you’re stalking at midnight: they put in WORK to make it happen.
Even if their shop is 2 months old. Even if they seem like they’re defying physics by selling tons of products with terrible photos.
LUCK had nothing to do with it. They did something IRL to create that success.
And you can do the exact same thing.
But imagine this: WHAT IF someone held your hand and walked you through every single step, in the RIGHT order, and made sure you were on the right track, month after month?

It starts to get DROOL-level tempting to get someone to just do it for you.
And here’s why that’s actually a TERRIBLE idea:
Have you noticed all the CHANGES Etsy has been making recently???
It’s raining EVERYTHING is different ALL THE TIME up in here.
Spoiler Alert: I’ve been selling on Etsy since 2015, and there have been three MAJOR SEO changes. Not to mention about 50 friggin’ SMALL changes.
And no one knows when that shit is gonna drop. You’re just walking along, minding your own business, when shit goes sideways.
And guess what: Google does it, Facebook does it, and Etsy does it.
That means EVEN if you have your own website…even if you wind up moving away from Etsy…
You STILL need to know what to do when the internet forces change direction.
So what does that have to do with your SEO?
It means after you paid me $2500 (yes, that’s how much I charge for a BASIC SEO overhaul — we won’t even TALK about what the big guns pay)…after you pay me a small fortune, several months later, it could all CHANGE.
Which means you could either a.) pay me another $2500 or b.) learn to be your OWN SEO consultant so you can fix that shit on the spot.
No waiting, no investment needed.
When you know your own SEO, you’re no longer a damsel in distress everytime Etsy (or any other platform!) makes some random change.
In fact, if you’re thinking about LEAVING Etsy because of all the changes they’ve made recently…I’ve got news for you:
It’s just as bad on your own website. Or Amazon. Or YouTube, Facebook, Insta…you name it, it’s all the SAME.
(Trust me, I’ve been building websites for over 10 years. And there’s NO SUCH THING as an online business that doesn’t have to make changes).
If you sell online, you’ll always have to deal with these little updates. Forever.
As in, that’s how the internet works.
Which is why it’s so important for you to understand how to create and drive YOUR OWN traffic.
#TruthBomb: SEO is going to be necessary for your business no matter where you take it.
And I didn’t even mention how useful all that SEO knowledge will be as you GROW your business…
✔ Wanna start a YouTube channel? You’ll need SEO for that.
✔ Wanna create a website where you sell products? You can’t get sales without traffic! You’ll need SEO for that.
✔ Wanna start a blog and get paid to teach people your mad skillz? Guess what? You STILL need SEO for that!
And that SEO I’m teaching you for Etsy traffic? Those same concepts can be applied to ALL those other places.
So aside from saving yourself $2500 or more…AND allowing you to TAKE CONTROL of your business…
It seems like knowing how to do your own SEO (and Etsy setup) is pretty damn useful!
Most people consider a house a good investment. Or a bunch of Google shares.
But you know what?
That shit is UNPREDICTABLE.
We don’t know what’s gonna happen tomorrow — the housing market could plummet. We could have another 2008 debacle. Trump could set some shit on fire.
Fact is, these days, there’s no such thing as a SAFE investment.
Or IS there?
Because they way I see it, there is ONE investment you can control.
Every single year, I invest the MAJORITY of my money into ME.
Yup, M-E.
What the *actual* fuck does that mean?
It means I spend money on the one thing I can FULLY PREDICT:
I know exactly how much work I’m capable of doing. I know exactly how hard I’ll try if I take a class. I know that I’ll squeeze every LAST DROP out of that online course I just paid for.

When I started my business 4 years ago, my anxiety was worse than it had ever been. I was about 101lbs (aka terrified of choking on all my food), constantly worried that I was going to die, and I could turn literally anything into a full-blown panic attack.
