I’ve been selling on Etsy for around 3 years. During those first years, I made £60k+ per year (around $90-100k for my American kiddos).
You can read about what it takes to maintain that level of sales in this article about my normal monthly income back then.
But at the end of my second year, I did something that changed EVERYTHING…And it altered the course of my biz forever.
What was my game changer??
I started a blog.
(I’m guessing you’ve read it, otherwise you wouldn’t be here right now) 😉
Something UNEXPECTED happened when my blog took off:
I REALIZED that people were MORE likely to buy from me on the BLOG than on Etsy.
In fact, while a couple simple emails would generate literally THOUSANDS of dollars on my blog, I started to feel like my Etsy shop was HOLDING ME BACK.
It took WAY more work to make $1000 on Etsy vs. the blog – and I started to resent how much MORE work it took just to get a day’s income on Etsy:
⇡ Etsy Seller Problems. ⇡
This used to be my BIGGEST secret.
While my blog was KILLING IT — It felt like Etsy was HOLDING me back.
So now, it’s two years later… I haven’t had time to tend to my Etsy shop in ages…and it SHOWS.
In 2017, my Etsy shop brought in around $28,600 (after expenses).
WHOA, that’s a serious sauce drop.
It happened because – let’s be honest, WHY would I tend to my Etsy shop when I could use my blog to make money instead?
In fact, I used to run THREE Etsy shops, and I had to close TWO of them because I couldn’t keep up with the demand. (Blogging + three Etsy shops = NO. SLEEP. EVER.)
So, what did the BLOG bring in during 2017?
Total Blog income 2017: $181,061.92
For real kids. This is the BIGGEST yearly salary I’ve ever seen in my life… and quite frankly, that number STILL doesn’t feel real.
I never expected to make that much money in a SINGLE year of my life.
After my yearly income wake-up call, I had a moment of clarity:
I spend WAY less time making that money with my BLOG than I do on ETSY.
BEFORE I had the blog…I had to work 80+ hours a week to make that kind of salary on Etsy ALONE.
But with my blog? I work an average of 3-6 hours a day this time of year. In the summer, that drops to 2 hours a day (Don’t judge…I need me some sunshine!)
Etsy workweek = 80 hours.
Etsy + Blog workweek? = 30 hours, MAX.
What kind of TWILIGHT ZONE insanity is THIS??? How the HELL did that happen?
Let’s find out:
Once upon a time…an Etsy seller tried to go on Vacation
We’ve all heard the story: a seller making $2300/month decides to take a much needed vacation.
She built her Etsy shop with SWEAT and BLOOD. It took her TWO years. She works 14-hour days. She never lets a customer convo go unanswered.
Meanwhile, she has NO idea what day it is, whether she ate lunch, or if she’ll ever have time to clean the house again.
Not to mention, her partner is one “cha-ching!” away from throwing her phone at oncoming traffic.
SO…she decides it’s finally time for a vacation.
She puts her Etsy shop in vacation mode, and proceeds to #GTFO.
🌴 [Insert Vacation Here] 🌴
Ok, feeling refreshed and newly tan, our heroine returns to her Etsy shop.
She reactivates her shop.
…and waits and waits and waits [oh SHIT!] 😭😭😭
Where are all the SALES she used to get?? WTF Happened? How can this BE??
Is it gonna take her ANOTHER two years to build her shop back up??
Okay, REWIND: Let’s Try this Again.
What if our shop owner had a BLOG?
Let’s say she emails her blog readers before she leaves. She tells everyone she’ll be on vacation. She also publishes a post on her blog and her social media.
And once again…
🌴 [Insert Vacation Here] 🌴
Re-freshed and re-tan for a second time (wear sunscreen kids!), she comes back home.
Now it’s time to re-open the shop.
But instead of flipping vacation mode “off”, she has OPTIONS now!
Our seller decides to send an email announcing her return. While she was at the beach, she got some trendy new supplies and is making a brand new line for her Etsy shop.
She decides to host a giveaway on her blog and social media networks. After a week goes by, she emails her readers to see if they want to join the giveaway too!
Her giveway goes NUTS — she gets hundreds of entries! After she chooses a winner, she decides to hold a flash sale for everyone who entered. They get 25% off for 2 days only.
Of the 340 people who enrolled in her giveaway, 30 people buy from her shop using the coupon.
That’s 30 sales in 2 days!
Instead of returning home to a SILENT Etsy shop, our seller got her shop up and running IMMEDIATELY…and she made several hundred dollars in the process!
What if you didn’t have to worry about going on vacation?

Make Your Own Success : With a Blog!
You know how I always recommend that you “go where your buyers ALREADY are?”
I’m talking about getting on social media, creating Etsy updates, and really making sure that the people who want your products CAN FIND YOU EASILY.
Makes sense, right?
Well, WHAT IF you could create a target audience TRAP?
- I’m talking about a place where all your buyers hang out online
- A place where they love to go for updates, advice, and to chat with each other.
- Somewhere they visit OVER and OVER each month.
Wouldn’t that KICK ASS?
You’d have the ultimate place to put your products…and everyone there would already be HUNGRY to buy!
THAT is an Etsy Blog!
Don’t believe me?
