Today you’ll learn how to mine your target audience on Google, Pinterest, and Facebook.

*Insert evil laughter here*… Yup, we’re going to use the internet stalking powers of giant companies to supercharge our marketing.

They gathered a shit load of data, and YOU can leverage that data to boost your sales.

But before we dive into the how-to, let’s talk about some common target audience MISTAKES.

Because if you’re making these mistakes, you can’t move forward (and quite frankly, you’re stifling your own income).

So, let’s learn what NOT to do, once and for all:

Save

EVERYONE is definitely not your target audience!

(Guess what: if you’re not willing to get REALLY specific, you’ll never make more sales)

Hey guess what? Everyone on the internet DOESN’T want your items! (Sorry Sugarbottom, time for some #truths!)

And when you try to sell to everyone, you wind up spreading yourself too thin… and making NO sales at all.

I’m going to prove this point with this mug right here:

It’s a mug, right? Everyone drinks some form of liquid, so my target audience must be HUGE, right???

Far from it! Let’s break down who’s NOT my target audience:

In fact, the more SPECIFIC I can get with my audience, the more likely I am to make a sale.

Would an 18-year-old, sarcastic girl with pink hair appreciate a birthday gift like this?

Um, almost certainly.

So, I need to go find out where sarcastic 18-year-old girls with pink hair hang out. (Answer: Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat).

Because I’m WAY more likely to make lots of sales if I’m literally surrounded by people who love and want my products.

Other sellers are not your target audience

(AKA – stop spending time on teams and discussion boards, and stop playing favorite games!)

Let me ask you something: as an Etsy seller, how often do you see something online and think “Oh, I could totally make that!” – and then you proceed to do just that (instead of buying it?)

Other Etsy sellers are NEVER your target audience for sales. I can tell you this for a FACT because of this blog, which is targeted at Etsy sellers.

My blog audience is entirely sellers like you, and do you know how often those other sellers actually buy my items on Etsy? This blog drives around 100 views (40-ish visits) per day to my Etsy shop. But I only make an Etsy sale to my blog readers once per month. One sale a month does not a full-time income make!

Seems pretty clear: other sellers are NOT my target audience on Etsy.

In the video below, we’ll talk about much easier ways to find your target audience…and figure out where THEY spend their time.

Because if your customers are hanging out somewhere, you need to be hanging out there too!

When you devote a large chunk of time to something (like Etsy discussion boards, teams, and favorite games)… you need to ask yourself: is this likely to make me $1000s per month?

If not, you need to cut that task entirely, and move on to something more productive.

So, are your Etsy teams, discussion boards, etc. making you $1000s/per month?

If the answer is NO, it’s time to STOP spending time there.

Instead of just “guessing” where you should be online, you need to KNOW where your customers are. Then GO where your customers are.

(And your customers AREN’T other Etsy sellers. So stop hanging out where other sellers are).

Your target audience is specific to YOU

(and it might look nothing like your competitor’s audience!)

Did you ever wonder how there can be SO many successful Etsy shops…isn’t the market totally saturated? How do all these sellers keep making sales?

I catch myself wondering this about bloggers all the time. Sometimes it’s totally overwhelming to be one tiny blogger in a sea of HUNDREDS…especially when those other people are covering such similar topics.

So why do people keep reading my stuff? Why are they even interested in me when there’s so many other bloggers out there talking about the same thing?

It’s simple: my target audience is DIFFERENT than my competitors’.

The girl who hates f-bombs is NOT going to enjoy my blog. (Trust me…I get emails from her all the time).

She might be a really LOYAL reader to my nearest competitor, though!

This principle works both ways. I’m sarcastic, gritty and real, and I do things a bit differently than other Etsy bloggers. My ideal reader finds that refreshing, and prefers me for that reason. (Yeah, that’s right, you have good f*cking taste!)

At the end of the day, your target buyer likes you for a SPECIFIC REASON. It may be something you do, it may be your style, your color choices…or it may be something simple (like your pictures and descriptions).

But the bottom line is this:

There IS something that sets you apart. You couldn’t make it this far without being unique in some way. Your job is to figure out WHAT makes you special…and then find groups of people who LOVE you for exactly that.
