As Etsy Sellers, we spend all our energy on one crazy life-or-death quest: “how can I make more sales?!?!?!”…BUT is that really all you need to know to make Etsy your bitch? I think not. There’s an even MORE important question that you’re not asking.
(Are you ready for it? Should I do a countdown?)
Here it is: Why do SOME items sell on Etsy and not others? How can we sell stuff on Etsy if we don’t know WHAT and WHY people are buying?
So, let’s dial it back a notch and get some perspective, shall we?
I’ve got a stupid fun exercise for you today. It involves you shopping for lots of sparkly shit specifically for YOU. That’s right, NO gifts, nothing for the kids: just plain YOU (and all your gloriousness).
And this exercise is going to teach you:
- WHAT customers want
- HOW to convince them to buy
- WHAT you’re doing wrong (or right)
- HOW you can improve your listings
- WHAT you need to change to make more sales
And it’s going to take about 8 minutes. (Yup, I timed it).
For those of you who don’t know, I used to be a prolific Etsy shopper. I spent HOURS scrolling through all the pages of Etsy items at midnight in my dorm room (yes, I was that kind of loser).
And during that time, I started to get a feel for WHY I bought certain things and not others. Hell, I even figured out WHAT I was most likely to click on, and what transformed me from harmlessly browsing to I MUST BUY THIS RIGHT NOW.
So, in memory of my shopaholic ghost of Christmas past, I created a (ridiculously entertaining) exercise that shows you how to do the exact same thing for your shop. Do it for yourself, do it with your friends, or do it with a bottle of wine 😉
Give it a try for yourself (instructions after video) —
Let’s go shopping on Etsy! Start by picking 10 items that make you go “I want that!” (don’t look at the price for these items.)
DO NOT shop in your niche, pick an item (or items) that you do not ever plan to sell on Etsy.
Once you have your 10 items, ask yourself these questions:
- What draws me to this item?
- (Look at the price for the first time. Ask – ) Would I spend this much on this item?
- Have I ever paid this much for an item like this?
- What makes ME spend more on some items and not others?
- How does this item’s photography compare to mine?
- What draws me to this item’s photo?
- What can I change about my shop based on these answers?
